16 & 23 March: Semi-classical

Come dance to celebrate Holi, India’s vibrant festival of colours that marks the arrival of spring. In this workshop in two parts, you will learn a choreography to a beautiful song that takes place during Holi: Mohe Rang Do Laal, from the movie Bajirao Mastani.

Aaricia created an exclusive choreography, specially for this workshop at Tala & Nritya, inspired by the original version by the legendary Kathak master, Pandit Birju Maharaj.

Expect to explore subtle abhinaya (expressions) and foundational techniques from the classical dance style Kathak (hand movements, footwork and turning), all while infusing the dance with Bollywood’s signature energy and flair.

The 2 workshops will allow you to discover the entire choreography but it is possible to participate in only one of the two days if you wish.

13 April: Kuthu

Immerse yourself in the percussions of southern India. Originally a street dance, Kuthu has stormed Indian cinema with its contagious energy and infectious beats. First embraced by South Indian films (Kollywood, Tollywood), Bollywood has also fallen for its unique attitude and folklore. In 2023, the Oscar win for Naatu Naatu cast an international spotlight on this dance form.

Join us as we blend tradition and modernity, dancing to the vibrant track Rakita Rakita Rakita from the film Jagame Thandhiram, featuring the multi-talented star Dhanush.

This song celebrates freedom, inviting you to let go, enjoy life to the fullest and dance without fear of judgment. So feel the wind of freedom as you discover or deepen typical Kuthu moves, especially its wild footwork, and explore how to embody them with (your unique!) style.

You’ll be introduced to the signature movements of Bollywood’s 40s-50s era and refine your ‘soft Bollywood’ skills: delicate expressions, elegant hand and wrist movements, and subtle hip flicks. Get ready to embrace your inner vintage Bollywood diva!

1 June: Kalbeliya

Kalbeliya is a high-energy dance style originating from Rajasthan, the land of deserts, palaces, and forts in North-West India. Made famous worldwide by artists such as Gulabo Sapera, Hameed Khan’s Musafir group, and French gitan musician Thierry ‘Titi’ Robin, Kalbeliya was recently recognised as Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO .

Characterised by its striking black costume, fast rhythms, fluid hip and hand movements, and unique ‘accents’—signature steps danced by Kalbeliya performers across Rajasthan and beyond—this dance is a dynamic and expressive experience. You’ll expand your Indian dance vocabulary with authentic Rajasthani movements, many of which are also popular in Bollywood choreographies!

Practical Info

  • This workshop is led by Aaricia. If you’ve danced with her before, you know that Kalbeliya holds a special place in her heart!

15 June: Dandiya Raas & Garba, with our special guest, Bhumika

Dandiya Raas & Garba are vibrant and energetic folk dances from Gujarat, in western India. Traditionally performed in a circular formation during the Navratri festival, these expressive dances celebrate community, spirituality, and joy. They blend rhythmic patterns hit with sticks (Dandiya Raas) or clapped with hands (Garba), intricate footwork, and graceful movements.

In this workshop, you will delve into the essence of Dandiya Raas and explore its foundational steps and techniques. Bhumika will combine it with Garba, offering a rich and diverse journey into these traditional folk dances from Gujarat.

This session offers a fun and engaging way to connect with Indian culture, and experience the joy of dancing together.

29 June: Bollywood Cabaret

Imagine stepping through a discreet door and finding yourself transported to the heart of a 1940s cabaret in Calcutta. The soundtrack for this workshop will be the mesmerizing track Calcutta Kiss from the movie Detective Byomkesh Bakshy (reminiscent of an Indian Sherlock Holmes or Hercule Poirot).

This workshop will blend a vintage cabaret atmosphere with the vibrant essence of Bollywood. Forget the outside world; all that is left is this cabaret, its dance floor, and an unstoppable desire to dance the night away.

Expect a friendly & respectful ambiance, and a mix of Indian dancelively footwork and sensual yet elegant movements, all set to a dynamic electroswing music.

Dress Code: no need for a seductive outfit, this is NOT burlesque tease. Wear comfortable clothes, that make you feel fabulous. If they have glitter or a touch of retro flair, even better!
